National Intergenerational Week – 8th to 14th March 2021

Press Release – Learning and Sharing Together (LaST)

Start

The Burnham Health Promotion Trust (BHPT) will be launching an Intergenerational Learning Programme during National Intergenerational week (8th to 14th March) entitled Learning and Sharing Together (LaST).

LaST is a programme designed to bring young people and older people together. By bringing the generations together they are able to learn new things and learn from each other about history and life experiences. LaST has clear educational benefits and in this time of Covid it can also reduce isolation and loneliness. Both key factors in good mental health – whatever the age.

How does LaST work?
LaST needs a primary school to form a partnership with a group of older people. The older people could be in residential care, sheltered housing or another community setting. Whilst LaST has been developed for supervised face to face meetings it has been successfully adapted to an online format during Covid, enabling distanced participation.

How to get started –
We have created the LaST Toolkit in the form of a comprehensive website. It includes ideas and guidance on how to set up and run an intergenerational programme for a school year with a special section on online projects. It includes resources for 30 topics.

Based on the success of the partnership between St. Peters CE School Burnham and Perry House sheltered housing scheme, LaST has been developed by Shirley Shaw of BHPT and is based on nearly 20 years’ experience.

We hope that the LaST Toolkit will enable many more children and older people to experience and enjoy the benefits that come from “learning and sharing together”.

It is planned to create a network of LaST users as the roll out and uptake of the Toolkit increases. Shirley and the team will host events to share ideas and experience.

End. ————————————————————————————————
